Joel Armitage, M.Eng., P.Eng.,
Joel is passionate about city‑building and land development, continuing a three‑generation family legacy of contributing to the region’s growth. With more than 20 years of leadership experience, he has consistently invested in people - building high‑performing teams across municipal government and engineering consulting within the land development and construction industry.
Mentorship has been a defining thread throughout Joel’s career. Having benefited from strong mentors himself, he has made it a priority to mentor and coach emerging leaders. Service to the industry and community is equally important to him. Joel currently serves on the Building Industry and Land Development (BILD) Calgary Region Board of Directors (2025–26) and volunteers on several technical committees focused on offsite levies, established areas utility servicing, and financial processes. His past governance roles include serving on the Board of Directors for the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Alberta (2018–20), the Okotoks Arts Council (2016–18), and as a public member of the Municipal Planning Commission in Okotoks (2007–15).
Joel completed both his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Calgary, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (1999) and a Master of Engineering specializing in Project Management (2004). He further strengthened his leadership foundation with a Master’s Certificate in Municipal Leadership from York University in 2013.
Over his 25‑year career, Joel has built a diverse and impactful portfolio. He began as a designer and project manager with Read Jones Christoffersen before joining the City of Calgary, where he spent 16 years progressing through increasingly senior roles in planning, real estate, affordable housing, and emergency housing development.
In 2018, Joel joined Stantec as Operations Lead for the Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan Community Development team. Over five years, he led the team through significant growth; doubling top‑line revenue, tripling bottom‑line margins, and increasing staff engagement scores by 30 percent. Under his leadership, the site servicing team delivered major projects such as the Arthur Child Cancer Centre and the new Scotia Place. The Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture teams grew into industry leaders, while the Field Services team consistently delivered the region’s largest construction programs with strong value‑engineering results year over year.
In 2024, Joel’s role expanded to include Community Development across Western Canada, overseeing 480 staff across eight offices and more than 1,700 active projects. Before his departure in November 2025, both top‑line and bottom‑line revenue had grown by one‑third.
Identifying potential, developing leaders, and building strong teams are central to Joel’s leadership philosophy. His approach is grounded in strategic planning, intentional action, and a commitment to achieving measurable, meaningful results.
